Onboarding to ways of working

Your company has its own way of doing things, and a good hire knows that. There might be a company induction, but what about any specific engineering standards? Or team ways of working?

In some organisations we have taken on a cohort of people at the same time in order to run a group training session, for example when I was at Laterooms they brought in Kevin Rutherford to run some training with us, we later had him run his XP Surgery at Co-op which was excellent! In my last year at Co-op I brought in Mark Kirschstein to run a two week training course with our newly hired cohort to immerse them in remote mob programming, a test driven approach and engineering design. This also helped build relationships with people outside the team.

  • Ways of working
  • Behaviours and standards
  • Rotate existing hires through taking people through this to keep it fresh
  • Link to performance to keep it relevant and fresh
  • Mentoring and coaching
    • Because these are skills you hone with practice
